HARRISBURG, Pa. (May 3, 2024) — Pittsburgh lawyer Rodney R. Akers, retired deputy general counsel in the Governor’s Office of General Counsel (OGC), will begin a three-year term on the Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Board of Governors at the conclusion of the association’s Annual Meeting on May 10 in Hershey.
Akers will serve as the PBA Zone 12 governor, representing Allegheny County lawyers. He is currently serving as a Zone 12 delegate, representing Allegheny County lawyers to the PBA House of Delegates.
Within the PBA, Akers is a member of the Judicial Evaluation Commission, chair of the Minority Bar Committee (MBC) Outreach Subcommittee and a member of the MBC Executive Council, co-vice chair of the Technology Committee and a member of the In-House Counsel and Government Lawyers committees. In recognition of his service to the profession, the latter named Akers Government Lawyer of the Year in 2023.
Appointed deputy general counsel in November 2007, Akers served in that capacity until March 2023. His principal areas of legal expertise include information technology, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, electronic discovery and contracts.
An adjunct professor at University of Pittsburgh Law School for nearly 20 years, Akers currently teaches a course in state and local government law. He is also an adjunct professor at Carlow University. Akers has served as a frequent lecturer and author on social media, technology, utility deregulation and outside counsel management topics.
Akers received his Juris Doctor from Harvard Law School and his bachelor’s degree with honors from the University of Virginia. He served as a law clerk to Judge John R. Hargrove Sr. on the U.S. District Court in Maryland.
