2023 Pro Bono Awards

Cox and Seaver-Hall of Erie County Receive PBA Pro Bono Awards, Dec. 7, 2023
Alexander K. Cox and Philip J. Seaver-Hall of Knox McLaughlin Gornall & Sennett PC, Erie, were recognized with PBA Pro Bono Awards on Dec. 7, 2023, for their work on a pro bono lawsuit that was a federal civil rights case in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Pennsylvania. The presentation took place during the Erie County Bar Association annual membership meeting. The case involved a plaintiff who alleged that he was subjected to excessive force and other civil rights violations by prison guards during his incarceration. A federal jury trial took place and settled in the client's favor. Over the course of several years, Cox dedicated more than 250 pro bono hours and Seaver-Hall dedicated more than 75 pro bono hours to this effort.

Leisawitz of Berks County Receives PBA Pro Bono Award, Nov. 2, 2023
Jesse Leisawitz, chief legal officer for the Reading School District, received a PBA Pro Bono Award at the Berks County Bar Association Annual Meeting, Nov. 2, 2023, in Reading. Leisawitz was recognized for his work with two pardon/expungement clinics and a citizenship clinic.

Newborn of Bucks County Receives PBA Pro Bono Award, Oct. 26, 2023
Brooke Newborn received a PBA Pro Bono Award at a meeting of the Bucks County Bar Association/Bucks County Bar Foundation (BCBF) in Doylestown on Oct. 26, 2023. Newborn concentrates her practice in real estate transactions, zoning, and land use for Obermayer Rebmann Maxwell & Hippel LLP.

Cosentino of Franklin County Receives PBA Pro Bono Award, Oct. 25, 2023
Anthony J. Cosentino, DiLoreto, Cosentino & Bolinger PC, Chambersburg, received a PBA Pro Bono Award at the Franklin County Bar Association Pro Bono Award Luncheon, Oct 25, 2023, in Chambersburg. Cosentino was nominated for his handling of protection from abuse cases, making court appearances with little advance notice to help cover for a legal services attorney and his “generous spirit and actions [that] have made a very positive difference in Franklin County.”

Allegheny County President Judge Kim Berkeley Clark Receives Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille Award, Oct. 20, 2023
Allegheny County President Judge Kim Berkeley Clark received the PBA Legal Services to the Public Committee Chief Justice Ronald D. Castille Award Oct. 20, 2023, in Pittsburgh. The award, named in honor of the Chief Justice Emeritus, recognizes exceptional contributions to improving civil legal aid in the commonwealth.

Pierangeli receives PBA Pro Bono Award; three Lackawanna county firms recognized, Sept. 14, 2023

Adrienne Pierangeli of Brian J. Cali & Associates, Dunmore, received a PBA 2023 Pro Bono Award at the Lackawanna County Equal Access to Justice Awards Sept. 14, 2023, in Scranton. Pierangeli also received the county’s Sam Fallk Equal Access to Justice Award. Joined by the PBA, Lackawanna Bar Association and Lackawanna Pro Bono honored the firms Abrahamsen, Conaboy & Abrahamsen PC, Dougherty Leventhal & Price LLP and Powell Zero Mundy, recognizing that each actively practicing attorney in the firms’ Lackawanna County office accepted at least one pro bono referral from Lackawanna Pro Bono. Frost of York County Receives PBA Pro Bono Award, April 18, 2023
Alice Anne Frost, chief executive officer, The PROGRAM, “It’s About Change,” was presented with a PBA Pro Bono Award in recognition of her work in collaboration with many stakeholders to launch The Pardon Project of York County (PPYC). PPYC seeks to assist individuals with a criminal record, who have completely served their sentence and are seeking a pardon forgiveness of their crime. The PROGRAM, “It’s About Change” will serve as the home of PPYC’s Pardon Fellow and York County’s Pardon Hub merging their existing menu with guidance, coaching, and advocacy for those seeking a pardon. Under Frost’s dedicated leadership this collaborative partnership yields win-win opportunities for both reentrants and the community.
