Pennsylvania Bar Foundation Names Temple University Law Student as Environmental and Energy Law Section Minority Scholarship Winner
HARRISBURG, Pa. (June 4, 2024) — The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation recently selected Su Ly, a student at Temple University Beasley School of Law, to receive a $2,500 Environmental and Energy Law Section Minority Scholarship.
The scholarship was created to award up to nine scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $2,500 to support historically underrepresented racial/ethnic minority law students attending schools in Pennsylvania. Awardees must provide evidence that their own academics, volunteer experience and interests show a commitment to working as an environmental and energy law attorney.
Ly’s interest in environmental stewardship began when he participated in a middle school summer program, hosted by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Region 3, that introduced Philadelphia children to environmental issues and solutions. That experience encouraged him to start an environmental student group in middle and high school and to pursue a career in environmental law.
Since 2021, Ly has served on Philadelphia’s Environmental Justice Advisory Commission. He is the secretary and helped garner support for “The Chinatown Stitch: Reconnecting Philadelphia to Vine Street” project. He also serves on the steering committee for EnviroPhilly, an organization that coordinates environmental justice advocacy. At his law school, Ly is a member of the Temple Law School Environmental Law Society, for which he helped coordinate an environmental justice event. He also is working with the Office of Student Services to organize an Earth Day health and wellness event.
Ly earned a bachelor's degree in earth sciences and a master’s degree in environmental studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
