HARRISBURG, Pa. (Jan. 10, 2025) — The Pennsylvania Bar Foundation Board of Directors met on Dec. 19, 2024, and unanimously approved the creation of an Elder Law Section Diversity Fund Scholarship.
Up to two scholarships of $2,500 each will be awarded to up to two rising second- or third-year students attending one of Pennsylvania’s nine accredited law schools who demonstrate commitment to elder law.
The scholarship will promote and support law students of diverse backgrounds who may be interested in pursuing a career in elder law and will better represent the diverse backgrounds of clients served by elder law attorneys.
“The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Elder Law Section recognizes that to better promote diversity, the conversation should start with law students. We want to show them there is a path to pursue elder law as a career. We want to open doors for those who wish to join our ranks,” said Jared Childers, past chair of the section.
“We are excited to have the scholarship as a vehicle to make connection with students who are interested in elder law as a practice area. We look forward to inviting students to the Elder Law Institute held each summer and providing mentorship to students seeking entry into this field,” he said.
The PBA Elder Law Section aims to assist Pennsylvania attorneys to meet the needs of their clients through networking, the exchange of ideas and information on substantive elder law issues and to promote the growth and diversity of Pennsylvania attorneys who practice elder law.
“Diversity of opinions, life experiences, points of view and backgrounds enriches our section and helps broaden our connection to those we serve as clients. The future of the section and the practice will be shaped by those who come after us. We want to open doors for those who will become the future leaders of the bar and for those who will one day be advocating for older adults,” Childers said.
