Law Day 2010

LAW DAY 2010
"Rule of Law: It's what I live by"

Law Day began in 1958 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower proclaimed Law Day to strengthen our great heritage of liberty, justice, and equality under the law. This year the Pennsylvania Bar Association is celebrating our 11th year of Law Day activities. The theme for Pennsylvania's 2010 celebration is "Rule of Law: It's what I live by."

This year's Law Day celebration will also feature mock trials and mock appellate arguments. The Pennsylvania Bar Association is proud to host the 2010 National High School Mock Trial Championships, May 6-9, in Philadelphia. In support of this honor our Law Day guide provides many engaging mock trials that can be used to teach students of all ages about our legal and judicial systems.

The Pennsylvania Bar Association and local bar associations across the state will sponsor Law Day activities throughout the month of May. In addition, schools, lawyers and judges are encouraged to work together to arrange for classroom visits and to use the PBA's free law-related lesson plan guide book in all schools. A copy of the lesson plan guide book is available as a PDF document for you to download.

The Law Day program is just one example of many civic and law-related education programs available to schools. The Pennsylvania Bar Association is a founding partner in the Pennsylvania Coalition for Representative Democracy (PennCORD). This initiative, founded by Third Circuit Court of Appeals Judge and Pennsylvania First Lady Marjorie O. Rendell, is a unique union of educational, advocacy, and governmental organizations that are committed to improving civic learning for students in grades K-College. The other founding partners are the Pennsylvania Department of Education and the National Constitution Center.
