PENNSYLVANIA BAR ASSOCIATION PRESENTS 20th ANNUAL PRINT MEDIA AWARDS

HARRISBURG (June 30, 1999) -- Pennsylvania Bar Association President Louis N. Teti today announced the winners of the 1999 Schnader Print Media Awards, which honor journalistic excellence in news or feature reporting of the legal system and its operations.

Funded by the Philadelphia law firm of Schnader Harrison Segal & Lewis LLP, the awards competition is in memory of former state attorney general and PBA president William A. Schnader. The awards recognize excellence in print journalism, particularly articles fostering greater public understanding of the legal system and the roles of society and the law, the courts, law enforcement agencies and the legal profession.

The winners are as follows:

  • Daily Newspapers: 49,000+ Circulation
    1st Place -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporters Bill Moushey and Bob Martinson for their 10-part series, �Win At All Costs,� which explores �a law enforcement culture that has allowed the pursuit of a conviction to replace the pursuit of justice.�

    2nd Place -- Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reporters Mackenzie Carpenter and Ginny Kopas for their series, �Casualties of a Custody War.� This three-part series examines a highly charged custody case in Pennsylvania and �explains why it reflects deeper problems in America�s family court system.�

  • Daily Newspapers: Under 49,000 Circulation
    1st Place -- Lancaster Intelligencer Journal reporter Paul Bomberger for his coverage of the controversial murder conviction of Lisa Michelle Lambert.

    2nd Place -- Hanover Evening Sun Reporter David LaTorre for his seven-part series, �Teen Driving,� which follows state government�s path to teen licensing reform. The series was prompted by the deaths of four area high-school students in auto accidents over a two-month period.

  • Weekly Newspapers
    1st Place -- Central Penn Business Journal reporter Matthew Vadum for his article, �Decisions on Employees Can Be Employer Minefield.� This article explores the new dangers employers face everyday in hiring and firing employees.

    2nd Place -- Central Penn Business Journal reporter Joyce Hanson for her article, �Oh! To Be Young and in Law,� which focuses on the starting salaries top law school graduates draw when they go to work at the bigger law firms.

    The Pennsylvania Bar Association is a professional organization that represents the interests of 26,000 lawyers across the commonwealth.
