PSU Dickinson School of Law Professor Emeritus Louis F. Del Duca Receives Pennsylvania Bar Associations Most Prestigious Honor

HARRISBURG (May 19, 2014) Louis F. Del Duca of Carlisle, professor emeritus at the Pennsylvania State University Dickinson School of Law, has been awarded the Bar Medal, the highest honor conferred by the Pennsylvania Bar Association. He is the tenth person to receive the award in the 119-year history of the association.

The Bar Medal is presented to a PBA member whose efforts have resulted in significant improvement in the administration of justice or the legal profession, or who has performed outstanding service to the association, profession or the community.

"PBA members of many generations have benefited from Professor Del Ducas outstanding scholarship, commitment and leadership," said 2013-14 PBA President Forest N. Myers who presented the award to Del Duca on May 16 during the PBA House of Delegates meeting in Hershey. As the editor of the PBAs scholarly publication for decades, he has provided intellectual guidance, detailed analysis of substantive legal issues and important information to law practitioners as they prepare for court."

For 45 years, Del Duca has served as editor of the Pennsylvania Bar Association Quarterly, a publication of analysis and opinion regarding substantive legal issues and developments. In a remarkable display of continual service to the PBA and to the legal profession, he has produced 180 issues of the PBA Quarterly. All articles have been developed, written, edited and prepared for publication under his supervision.

In addition to his editorship of the PBA Quarterly, Del Duca served for over a decade in the 1980s as the editor of the Judicial Highlights" section of The Pennsylvania Lawyer, the associations magazine.

In 2013, the PBA Business Law Section presented Del Duca with its second annual W. Edward Sell Business Lawyer Award for his "extraordinary contribution to the practice of business law" in Pennsylvania. Del Duca served as a long-time editor of the Business Law Section newsletter, a publication he co-edited with Sell for many decades.

Del Duca's service to PBA also has included involvement in the PBA International and Comparative Law Section and the PBA Editorial, Judicial Administration, Plain English, Professionalism and Statutory Law committees.

Affectionately named "the Duke" by his colleagues, Del Duca joined the PSU Dickinson School of Law faculty in 1956. He is the longest-serving faculty member in the school's history. A leader in the movement among U.S. law schools to increase international education opportunities, Del Duca founded and managed Penn State Law's summer programs in Europe.

He has been, and continues to be, a vital part of the development of national and international commercial law. Del Duca is editor in chief of the Uniform Commercial Code Law Journal, which offers in-depth coverage of UCC revisions, changes in case law and how the code affects business practices.

He served as president of the International Academy of Commercial and Consumer Law and as the United States' collaborator to the Rome International Institute for the Unification of Private Law.

Del Duca holds degrees from Temple University, Harvard Law School and the University of Rome Law School.

Founded in 1895, the Pennsylvania Bar Association strives to promote justice, professional excellence and respect for the law; improve public understanding of the legal system; facilitate access to legal services; and serve the 27,000 lawyers who are members of the association.
