� Pennsylvania�s First Lady Marjorie O. Rendell keynote speaker at
Tenth Annual Conference �

HARRISBURG (April 24, 2003) � The Pennsylvania Bar Association (PBA) Women in the Profession presented its Anne X. Alpern Award, Lynette Norton Award and the Award for the Promotion of Women to Leadership Positions to two Philadelphia lawyers and one law firm during its tenth annual conference April 24 in Philadelphia. The awards were presented at a luncheon, which featured U.S. Court of Appeals Third Circuit Judge Marjorie O. Rendell, first lady of Pennsylvania, as the keynote speaker.

Anne X. Alpern Award: Charisse Lillie, Esq.

Charisse Lillie, chair of the Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP Litigation Department, received the annual Anne X. Alpern Award. This award is given to a female lawyer or judge who demonstrates excellence in the legal profession and who makes a significant professional impact on women in the law. The award, established in 1994, was named for Anne X. Alpern, who was Pennsylvania�s attorney general in 1959 and the first woman state attorney general in the nation.

Before joining Ballard Spahr in 1992, Lillie served as Philadelphia City Solicitor; general counsel for the City of Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority; an assistant U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania; a Villanova University School of Law professor; and a trial attorney in the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. Lillie recently served as chairman of the board of the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia and is the immediate past chair of the ABA Commission on Racial and Ethnic Diversity in the Profession. She currently is a member of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Committee on Racial and Gender Bias in the Justice System. She is an active mentor through her involvement on the boards of the Juvenile Law Center, the Franklin Institute and Leadership Inc. Lillie earned a bachelor of arts degree from Wesleyan University, a J.D. from Temple University Beasley School of Law and a LL.M. from Yale Law School.

Lynette Norton Award: Roberta D. Liebenberg, Esq.

Roberta D. Liebenberg, the first female partner at Fine, Kaplan & Black R.P.C., received the Lynette Norton Award, which was created in memory of Lynette Norton, a founding member of the PBA Women in the Profession who died in 2002. Lynette Norton was an advocate for young women in the legal profession and worked to promote women�s rights and literacy. This award is designed to recognize and encourage female attorneys who excel in litigation skills and who are devoted to mentoring female lawyers.

Liebenberg, a member of the Pennsylvania, American and Philadelphia bar associations, serves on the PBA Board of Governors and in the PBA House of Delegates. She is a past chair of the PBA Women in the Profession and was the vice chair of the ABA Commission on Women in the Profession. She also served as co-chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association�s Ad Hoc Committee on Gender, Racial and Ethnic Bias in the Justice System and its Task Force on Gender Fairness in the Civil Justice System. Liebenberg is on the boards of the Anti-Defamation League, Philadelphia chapter, and the Women�s Way. She is a past board member of the Women�s Center of Montgomery County. Liebenberg is a graduate of the University of Michigan and Catholic University of America Columbus School of Law.

Award for the Promotion of Women to Leadership Positions:
Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP

Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP received the Award for the Promotion of Women to Leadership Positions. This award was established in 2002 to recognize the law firm from among the 100 largest law firms in Pennsylvania that has done the most to promote its women lawyers to leadership positions within the firm. These leadership positions include managing partner, equity partner and department/section/practice group head.

Ballard Spahr Andrews & Ingersoll, LLP has over 450 lawyers and seven offices located throughout the U.S., with over 250 of its lawyers practicing in Pennsylvania. Firm-wide, 20 percent of Ballard Spahr�s Board are women. The firm�s Pennsylvania office managing partner is a woman, Lynn R. Axelroth, and 22 percent of its equity partners, 23 percent of its partners, and 18 percent of its department and practice group heads are women. There are three part-time partners, all of whom are women. Two of those women are equity partners.
