Federal Funding Authorized through Prosecutors and Defenders Incentive Act
On Dec. 16, 2009, President Barack Obama signed H.R. 3288, the Consolidated Appropriations Act for FY 2010.The appropriations act includesthe first allocation of funding in the amount of $10 millionfor the John R. Justice Prosecutors and Defenders Incentive Act. The National Legal Aid & Defender Association (NLADA) will workwith the U.S. Department of Justice through the beginning of 2010 to set up the structure and procedures to administer the program.After the program is up and running, NLADA will continue to work to increase funding so this opportunity will be available for every public defender in need.
