Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP Receives Allegheny County Bar Foundations Public Service Award for Pro Bono Legal Assistance
The national law firm of Kirkpatrick & Lockhart LLP (K&L) was presented with the Allegheny County Bar Foundation's (ACBF) Public Service Award for pro bono work by a law firm at the October ACBF Fellows Dinner.
K&L was recognized for its continuing efforts in handling cases from the Protection from Abuse (PFA) program in record numbers. During 2001, 44 K&L partners, associates, paralegals and summer associates spent more than 1890 hours representing individuals seeking protection from abuse in approximately 192 cases. Since 1992, more than 1,500 low-income victims of domestic abuse have received free legal services from K&L lawyers. The firm partnered with the Neighborhood Legal Services Association (NLSA) in 1992 to establish the PFA program.
"K&L continues to be a valuable partner to the PFA program," said Robert Racunas, executive director of NLSA. "The dedication and commitment of K&L's lawyers has been instrumental in meeting the legal needs of this particularly vulnerable client group in Allegheny County."
In 1999, NLSA recognized K&L for its pro bono work on behalf of victims of domestic abuse. K&L lawyers engage in other pro bono efforts on behalf of the organization, including K&L sponsored training sessions for handling PFA cases.
